frugal beauty: epsom salt

Epsom salt is a naturally occurring mineral found in water. It has many health benefits. It has many beauty benefits as well. And because it is so inexpensive, it is a good choice for the frugal life.

Face Cleaner: Suggestion is to mix a 1/2 teaspoon Epsom with your regular cleansing cream. Massage into your skin and rinse with cold water. It will then serve to soften and exfoliate old skin cells.

Blackheads: 1 teaspoon Epsom and 3 drops of Iodine in 1/2 Cup of boiling water. Let the the mixture cool, to where you can insert your finger in it. Now apply with a cotton ball (or swab) to the blackhead. Repeat 3-4 times, reheating the solution if necessary. Gently remove the blackhead and then dab the area with an alcohol based astringent.

Note: It is safe to ingest Epsom Salt, and is an FDA approved laxative. But as with anything medical consult your Doctor before doing it yourself. Remember your skin will absorb the Magnesium and Sulfates.

Exfoliate: 2 cups of Epsom Salt with 1/4 cup petroleum jelly, and a few drops of lavender essential oil. Gently scrub the dry skin patches, with the mixture.

Soaking Feet: Same benefits as bathing, it reduces the stress. But it is also used to eliminate fungi that cause athletes foot. Once to twice a day soak your feet in warm water with a handful of Epsom Salt. Combine this with keeping your feet dry, and changing your socks, plus applying an anti fungus cream.

Nail Fungus: Same application as the feet but also filing the nail down before soaking so as the Epsom Salt can reach the fungus.

Note: Do not take an Epsom salt bath if you have high blood pressure or a heart or kidney condition.

Epsom salt is a great fertilizer. It is very inexpensive and simple to use. And your plants will thank you.

Houseplants: 2 tablespoons per gallon of water; feed plants monthly.

Sage: Do not apply! This herb is one of the few plants that doesn't like Epsom Salt.

Garden Startup
Sprinkle approximately one cup per 100 square feet. (10’x10’) and mix into soil before planting.

For the General Garden: 1 cup per 100 sq ft. mixed into the soil before planting. This will help the germination of your plants, aids in the absorption of phosphorus and nitrogen (two very important fertilizer minerals).

Tomatoes
Apply one tablespoon per foot of height for each plant every two weeks.

coupons are not the only way to save money. a lot of money-savers happen without leaving the house. here is an example of one of them:

1. Wear clothing more than once (except for undies). The United Nations Environment Programme did the math and found out that you can save energy (use up to 5x less) by washing clothes in cold water after wearing them at least three times, then line dry without using ironing.

2. Use a cup of white vinegar in the rinse cycle instead of fabric softeners. The vinegar balances the pH of soap which leaves your clothes soft and chemical free. And vinegar is cheap.

3. Use concentrated eco-friendly laundry detergent to help save the earth.

4. Make your own laundry soap. It's cheap and actually easier to make than you think. Search the web for some awesome recipes. Most recipes use only 3 ingredients which you can get in the laundry section of any store.

5. Upgrade your washing machine to front-loading instead of top-loading; the front-loading uses less water. But if you can't upgrade machines, then try these tips: Wash with cold water. 90% of laundry energy costs comes from heating the water. You can even do whites in cold if you buy detergent for cold water. Wash only full loads of laundry or use the "load size" selector. The same tips apply for the dryer.

6. Air your clean laundry! Dryers use a lot of energy. Hang clothes on the line. Here is a tip on how to line dry while avoiding stiff clothes.

7. Help your dryer work better when you do use it. Frequently clean the lint filter to increase efficiency and shorten drying time. Use the moisture sensor if your dryer has one.

8. Avoid ironing. Heat destroys the fibers in fabrics. To help get rid of excess wrinkling, hang up clothing immediately after washing. Cut the final spin cycle on easily wrinkled fabrics such as linen. And fold dry clothes where you want your creases to be. Store them under other clothes so the weight can also remove some wrinkles.

9. Use your local laundry service. Those commercial grade washers and dryers in the laundry mat are more efficient than the ones in our homes. You can also use a laundry service and ask them to use green detergents.

10. Skip the dry cleaning. It is expensive and un-green. Not only that, but the chemicals have been linked to cancers and reduced fertility. Buy clothes that don't require dry-cleaning. For the items you already own, some can be hand laundered. For others, try to find a dry cleaner that uses wet cleaning process or that uses less harsh chemicals (see the EPAs list of CO2 Cleaners).

meal planning (my first)

i am trying something new this week: meal planning.

i tell ya, when i sat down to plan B, L and D, i lost my appetite! i also got to thinking, "ppl sure do need a lot of food." subhanallah! it is a good reminder of how much we depend on allah for just staying alive! and allah NEVER needs food; NEVER needs help staying alive! allah is the Creator and everything else is His creation. and the creation depends on Him for everything.

so back to meal planning.

i searched the net. did some quick reading (OrgJunkie Meal Plan Monday) and then got going. at first, i printed meal planning sheets (like this one from OrgJunkie and this one from ProjectGirl). then i quickly dropped those and came up with my own idea: a spiral notebook!

it is so simple. def old school, low-tech and low-budget. but hey, it works. i can look back (eventually) at prev meal plans. i can make notes - too difficult, or didnt taste they way i like, allergies, etc.

there is also space for shopping lists. wow! i am surprised by how this helps w/shopping.

and oh yeah, my doc (a naturopathic) put me on an anti inflammatory diet. so i glued the first page of the plan details on the inside cover and second page of the plan to the first blank sheet of paper so that it is easy to refer to when planning meals.

so here is how i created my meal plan sheet in my spiral:
1-- from the top line, i counted down 4 lines. drew a horizontal line from the left edge to the right edge of the paper at the 4th line. repeated this until the end of the paper.
2-- wrote the days of the week in the left margins (to the left of the red line).
3-- folded the paper in half by lining up the right edge of the sheet to the red line next to the left margin. kept the paper folded and folded in half again (to the red left margin line).
4-- opened the paper. drew vertical lines from the top of the page to the bottom to create nice little cells. wrote breakfast, lunch, dinner, supplies/notes across the top. its done!

i was surprised by how long it took me to write down my meals. i had to really dig deep to create 3 meals a day times 7 days (21 meals). and like i said, i lost my appetite by the time i finished.
but the great thing, the really, really great thing, is that i know exactly whats for dinner! no more standing w/the fridge door w/that blank look! it saves sooooooooooo oooooo oooo much time!

like today, i had to go to a sis house. i got back and it was easy to start dinner. the decision about what to cook had been already made. and i knew i had all of the ingredients. easy peasy.

so, if there is anyone who does not do meal planning, i highly recommend that you give it a try. it is slow going at first, but well worth the effort.

i know many of u have seen those produce bags that many crafters out there make. well, why sew them. i found this idea on Frugal Living NW; she uses Tidy totes! from dollar tree! . . . pick up a pack or two for someone who cant afford it.

anyway, i decided to give it a try. i loved it!

since i take my own reusable shopping bags to the store anyway (most stores pay money for using ur own bags), taking these little guys along is really simple. i put them in a zip pocket on the front of one of my shopping bags.

and using them is tooooo easy. first, i dont have to stand in line and wait to get one of those plastic ones. u know how that is! the person in front of you is really slow at removing them.

and they are easier to deal with than trying to get those plastic bags open . . . u know what i mean . . . the tops of those plastic jobbies always want to stick together and u gotta use spit to get them undone. i have even had one upside down trying to get it open! time-waster!

i purchased 2 packs of these totes at my local dollar tree for $1 a 4-pack. these things are $3.99 at Ace hardware store (see for yourself).

one time when i was at the checkout, the cashier asked me why i had them; she thought they did something special to the fruit. i told her no, i'm just into that recycle thing. she thought the whole idea was sooo cute and convenient. i think she ran out to dollar tree when her shift was up.

so have fun with these. and think of more creative uses for them!

here is a great "how to" on price books. and according to its author, "it only takes an hour of your time to create one and a few minutes to maintain one." we shall see about that. i am thinking to set aside a day some time soon to make one. maybe it can be a group project.

Soy vs Almond

in my quest for a milk-like beverage that tastes good, i gave up soy milk and switched to almond milk. it tastes better to me.

from what i have been able to observe, trader joe's has the best price on almond milk in my area. they also have good prices on pasta. i do make a mental note of some prices but its better if i make a price book; thats next on my list of things to do.

on sunday, i got 8 boxes of kellogs cereal for $4! thats 50cent a box! i printed all the coupons from the net and used them with an in-store coupon. and i also got 4 bags of pre-cut lettuce for $2 -- looks like there's a lot of salad in my future (oh my).
